I stayed up late last night watching that DVD of Handel’s Theodora. I went to bed thinking about it and I woke up this morning still thinking about it. That is one of the most beautiful things I have seen in some time. Not beautiful in the sense of pretty, but beautiful in the sense of aesthetically whole and emotionally wrenching. Having seen that, my reaction to the choice of title and cover art for that Gauvin/Lemieux recital CD (“Streams of pleasure” is from the final scene of Theodora) is a little different. Not negative, but different.
