Weekend 12-8-12

Still in Los Angeles. One of the papers at this conference was, oddly enough, about music and colonial counters. It was focused on how, first of all, music was often used to communicate, or express good intentions, in cases where people did not speak one another’s languages; there was also a section about how people in the early modern world conceived of music in theoretical terms – specifically that music could be an abstract, ideal form of communication that might be used as a universal language. (Also, apparently a lot of people used to think it was impossible to sing quarter-tones. Search me as to why.)
