Or maybe it was one of the famous belching bears of Göttingen?

So I was listening to a 1994 recording of Handel’s Giustino (from the Göttingen Festival, recorded on HM; the conductor is Nicholas McGegan) and although the quality of the performance is high, I have to say that the – I assume simulated – bear growl in Act I sounds a lot like a deep, throaty belch. This produces the impression that the opera’s hero Giustino has despatched not a dangerous wild animal but rather Barney from the Simpsons, whose presence in a Handel opera would probably be one of those things that requires a fairly elaborate explanation. Or perhaps no explanation at all. But there is no middle ground. (Besides, Barney has always seemed more of a verismo type to me.)

  1. You know, it’s interesting you should mention them. I was just this afternoon wondering whatever happened to the the famous belching bears of Göttingen… Life is strange, isn’t it?
