Thursday gratuitous history moment: Superheroes of the Eighteenth Century

“In the evening at the coffee house, I met Mr. Hasell, and enquiring how he did and how he had fared on his way, he replied as to health he was pretty well, but he had been almost devoured with buggs and other vermin and had met with mean, low company that had made him very uneasy. He added that he had had good news from Barbados concerning his friends there from one, who . . .called himself Captain Scrotum, a strange name indeed.”

From the Itinerarium of Dr. Alexander Hamilton, June 7th 1744.
