Just in case you need a delightfully hostile review of an old DVD to start your weekend off right . . .

Check out this one of that 1990s production of Handel’s Alcina (you know the one, with all the wallpaper).  Highlights include “dramatic windowless monads” AND “embarrassing confusion of bare-chested hostility radiating in all directions.”

  1. Translation: I want a traditional production and/or I don’t like bare breasts.

    I like the production a lot, never quite got what people had against it. I especially like the “tools” in the corner, very allegorical tableau-like. I think there are a lot of cuts musically speaking though.

    1. I haven’t watched it in a few years, but I remember not enjoying how it looked – not because of the concept in and of itself, just that there was a lot of detail to register and the visuals (all those misc. objects lying around!) kept pulling me out of the music.
