I have commented before that based on an unscientific sampling of opera characters, the name Elvira enjoyed what I would call a tough to explain popularity in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

It doesn’t stop at opera, either. Did you know that one of famous frontiersman Davy Crockett’s daughters was named Rebecca Elvira?

  1. Odd coinncidence. When I got home last night I was trying to decide whether to watch Daniel Catan’s “Il Postino” or “Elvira, Mistress of the Dark”. I went lowbrow.
